Model Project
For this project you will make a three-dimensional model of your bedroom and some of the objects in it. To make your model, you will first measure the dimensions of your room and the objects in it. You will record these values in a data table. After comparing the measurements, you will convert them to scale. The scale is 1 inch on the model equals 1 foot (12 inches) in the real room. After the measurements have been scaled, you will choose materials to build your model. Before you start construction, you will use graph paper to sketch to scale the parts of your model. Once your model is complete, you will present it to the class and explain how you made it. You may also discuss any problems you had while constructing the model and how you solved these problems.
Project Rules and Hints
• Work on the project each day so that you will meet the project deadlines.
• Follow the safety guidelines in Appendix A as you construct your model.
• Study your room to decide on which objects to include in your model. Choose no more than 10 items.
• The materials you choose will depend on what you are modeling. Scissors, tape and glue, a ruler or yardstick, and cardboard will probably be most useful. Other materials you might use include construction paper, scraps of fabric, plastic transparencies, thin, flexible wire, craft sticks, styrofoam, wood scraps, cardboard and toothpicks.
• Put all of the pieces of your model in their correct positions on the sketch before you glue or tape anything in place on your base. This will give you an idea of what your finished project will look like. This trial will also allow you to see if you’ve made any major mistakes in converting the measurements.
Project Timeline
Tasks and Due Dates
1. Measure and record the dimensions of everything
to be modeled. Thursday 12/11
2. Convert measurements to scale and record the values
in the data table. Friday 12/12
3. Make a scale drawing of your room’s floor plan. Tuesday 12/16
4. Choose and collect materials to make your model. Thursday 12/18
5. Start constructing your scale model. Friday 12/19
6. Finish the model and start preparing your presentation. Wednesday 1/7
7. Present your model and explain its construction. Friday 1/9
1 Foot (12 inches ) = 1 inch
¼ foot or 3 inches = ¼ inch
Science Fair
1. The distance between the planet and the sun
2. The planet’s atmosphere
3. The diameter (size) of the planet
4. The period of revolution
5. The average temperature
6. The number of known moons orbiting the planet
7. At least one other interesting fact.
Once you have recorded your information, illustrate each page with a picture of the planet. You may draw, or paste in pictures from magazines or other sources. You will have some time in class but you should work on your book at home as well. I am available after school any day but Thursday if you want to stay for help.
The eight pages are due Friday May 22.
Once your eight pages are complete, get the go ahead from your teacher and you may begin working on a cover, which will feature some of the other bodies in our solar system. The steps for creating a cover are:
1. Choose a piece of construction paper and fold it in half.
2. On the Front cover create a title and below it write your name as the author.
4. Glue another piece of white paper on the inside back cover and title it “Meteors, Asteroids, and Comets”. Write down the definitions and a fact for each term.
5. Attach the cover to your book.
The completed book is due by May 27 and worth 100 points.
